SPANISH

At Kings Avenue, our children have weekly Spanish lessons across Key Stage 1 and 2. We are very lucky to have a specialist, Spanish-speaking teacher delivering these lessons to all of the children. Through our Curriculum, we aim for the children to develop their skills and confidence in the following key areas:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing

Our Curriculum Map, which can be found at the bottom of this page, shows the topics that are taught in each year group across the school year. Although children may re-visit a topic in more than one year group, there is always progression in terms of the vocabulary and sentence structures they are expected to learn and use.

In addition to the learning of the language, we also aim through our Spanish curriculum to develop our children’s cultural awareness. As part of their lessons, they learn about the traditions, celebrations, festivals, cuisine and famous people of Spanish-speaking countries. Diversity is promoted through comparing these to their own cultural traditions. To further this push, we have plans to run a residential visit to Spain in 2015-16, for our Year 6 children, where they will have the opportunity to practise their language skills whilst also experiencing Spanish culture firsthand.

To provide opportunities for children to practise their Spanish skills at home, we have purchased a subscription for the website Linguascope; each child has their own log in for this, and through this they can use the activities and games to consolidate what they have learnt in the classroom and share their Spanish learning with their parents/carers. Visit the website www.linguascope.com to learn more about what this website has to offer.

There are also extra-curricular activities on offer to promote the learning of Spanish further; there is a weekly Spanish club for KS2 children, and another club focusing on developing English skills for Spanish-speaking children. Throughout the year, we will be looking for new ways to enrich our curriculum, and further updates on activities taking place can be found in our weekly newsletters.
