At Kings Avenue, we have encouraged a great opportunity to think about the skills the children may need for their future careers. IntoUniversity provides local learning where young people are inspired to achieve. At the school and local centre, they offers an innovative programme that supports young people from all backgrounds to attain either a university place or another chosen aspiration.
Recently In2University came into our school and encouraged the children work together in groups looking at different jobs. In one group they learned what it takes to be a palaeontologist. In another they understood and practised the skills needed to be a product designer and in the third group they focused on what it takes to be a civil engineer. Perseverance and overcoming challenges were a big part of their new roles. Matthew in 4S wrote ‘When I am older, I want to go to University because I really want to learn more Maths such as angles, counting beyond 10000 and hard algebra. I am so excited for the future!’.
Year 5 were also lucky enough to go and visit the Brixton In2University centre. Both classes got to find out what life might be like at University if they chose a specific career – did you know there are over 50,000 careers you could go to university to learn about? In four groups, they learned about what courses they might take, what and where the different universities were, what accommodation was like and the different clubs and societies at Universities. The children really enjoyed learning about this slice of higher academic life. The staff at In2University were also thoroughly impressed with the children and how they supported and encouraged each other.
Children spoke highly of their experiences and what they learned; ‘ I liked what it was like to be a product designer and I designed a brand new trainer!”
‘IntoUniversity were encouraging us to be what we wanted to be … they were basically showing us not to give up on our dreams. I started to understand and I felt happy’
‘When I am older, I want to go to university because I want to learn more maths … I am so excited for the future!
Ýear 5 and Year 6 will also get more chances to experience more of what In2University have to offer later in the year. Have a look at some of the pictures below!
