Art & Design and Design Technology

ART AND DESIGN

At Kings Avenue School, the Arts are one of our Curriculum Drivers, and Art and Design is a key part of this. We are passionate about providing our children with a wide range of opportunities to explore and develop their artistic talents.

Each year group studies one Art and Design unit per term, alternating with Design Technology. We have broken down the requirements of the National Curriculum programmes of study into these units to ensure there is full coverage of a range of areas of art, including drawing skills, painting skills, sculpture, printing, working with textiles and collage. In general, the children practise and develop skills in short, practical tasks, and then apply the skills they have learnt to create a finished piece.

We are working to implement the use of sketch books across the school, as a means for the children to record, collect, develop and refine their ideas as a unit progresses. Each child in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 has their own sketch book, which they will take up with them through the school to show how their artistic skills progress over time.

To enrich our Art and Design curriculum, we also look to make links with local galleries, which provide either educational visits or projects/workshops for our children to participate in. Furthermore, we have weekly Art clubs for Key Stage 1 and 2, which provide our children with further opportunities to develop their talents.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Each year group studies one Design Technology unit of work per term, alternating with Art and Design.  These units cover the full breadth required by the programmes of study from the National Curriculum, from mechanics to textiles to food technology.  Throughout these units, our children also have the opportunity to apply skills learnt in other subjects, particularly from Mathematics, Science and Computing.

For information about what we teach in Art and Design and Design Technology in each of our year groups, please see the Curriculum Maps below for Key Stage 1 and 2.
